Gastric Balloon, Types and Weight Loss Effects

The gastric balloon is one of the most effective non-surgical weight loss methods. Designed to promote weight loss, this innovative device offers a less invasive, interventional approach compared to traditional weight loss surgeries. In this blog post, we will explore how the gastric balloon works, its types, its effects on weight loss and what to expect when you choose this option.

What is a Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon is a silicone balloon that is inserted into the stomach and usually inflated with liquid or air. This can be done endoscopically or non-endoscopically (swallowable balloon), which means that a small tube is inserted into the stomach through the mouth. Once inflated, the balloon takes up space in the stomach and thus creates a feeling of fullness with a smaller amount of food. It also creates a distinct feeling of fullness at first.

Types of gastric balloons

6 Monthly Gastric Balloons

It is one of the most commonly used types of gastric balloon. After these balloons are placed in the stomach, they are inflated with a certain amount of liquid (400-700cc). The patient sleeps completely during the procedure. First, the stomach is completely checked with the help of an endoscope. If there is no problem in the stomach, the balloon is placed in the stomach and inflated with a certain amount of liquid according to the size of the stomach. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes. These balloons are deflated and removed at the end of 6 months (when their stay in the stomach is over), again with the help of endoscopy.

Adjustable Gastric Balloon (1 Year Gastric Balloon)

An adjustable gastric balloon is a balloon system in which the inflation level can be adjusted according to the patient's needs. Such balloons are initially inflated with a low filling rate (e.g. 400-450cc) and additional fluid can be added as needed during the treatment process. This flexibility adapts to individual needs and optimizes the weight loss process. An important advantage of these balloons is that they can remain in the stomach for 1 year. Adjustable balloons can help achieve more effective results by providing a personalized weight loss experience.

Swallowable, Self-Dissolving Gastric Balloons

These balloons are designed as capsules. At the back there is a silicone connection point in the form of a thin string. The patient first swallows this capsule. After it is seen that the capsule is inside the stomach (by taking an X-ray), the balloon is inflated. Dissolvable gastric balloons are designed to remain in the stomach for a certain period of time (4-5 months). At the end of this period, it dissolves naturally and is excreted from the body. Such balloons offer a minimally invasive, interventional approach. The most important advantage of these balloons is that they allow the patient to complete the treatment process without requiring an additional procedure to remove the balloon.

Effects of Gastric Balloon on Weight Loss

1. Hunger Suppression: One of the primary effects of the gastric balloon is to suppress hunger. By taking up space inside the stomach, it provides satiety with less food, which can significantly reduce calorie intake.

2. Effective Weight Loss: Clinical studies have shown that patients lose 15-25 kilograms in the first six months of gastric ballooning. The amount of weight loss may vary depending on individual factors and factors such as compliance with dietary recommendations.

3. Support for Lifestyle Changes: The gastric balloon works most effectively with a structured weight loss program that includes dietary changes and increased physical activity. The balloon acts as a tool to initiate weight loss and facilitates the adoption of healthy habits.

What Should You Expect During and After Treatment?

1. Acclimatization, Toleration Phase: After gastric balloon placement, some patients may experience discomfort, nausea or bloating as they adjust to the presence of the balloon. These symptoms usually subside within a few days.

2. Continuous Monitoring: Regular follow-up appointments with healthcare professionals are essential to monitor progress and address concerns. These checks ensure that the balloon is working correctly and that the patient is adhering to the recommended lifestyle changes.

3. Removal: When the balloon's stay in the stomach is over, the balloon is emptied and removed. Patients are instructed to continue a healthy diet and exercise regimen to maintain weight loss results.
