In this blog post, I will talk about Zeynep's (name is representation) story. Zeynep is 26 years old. According to what she told, Zeynep has always been overweight since she knew herself. He has been on diets all his life and has lost countless pounds, but then he always regained those weights. Finally, he got tired and after a long research, he decided to have sleeve gastrectomy surgery. The research process took almost a year. When she arrived, Zeynep said:
- “Sir, I know everything you are going to tell in general terms. I researched a lot and decided to have this surgery (tube stomach surgery). I am determined to have this surgery. But my mom doesn't want me to have this surgery
When Zeynep's mother came to her senses, she said:
- ''My daughter can't hold her throat. If he can hold it, he will definitely lose weight''
When you look from the window of Zeynep's mother, she is actually right in her own way. He does not know that it is very difficult to lose weight effectively after a certain point with diets, and that permanent weight loss with diets does not exceed 5-10%. Her mother thinks that not only her daughter can do this. He thinks, "So if he grabbed his throat, he would definitely lose weight"
According to him, his daughter is actually healthy, even if she is overweight. There is no problem. She is a mother. After all, this is surgery. Even though the risk of sleeve gastrectomy is very low in experienced hands, why would she be willing to let her daughter take such a risk?
She is acting on maternal instinct. He doesn't know that his daughter is actually investing in her future in terms of her own health. Zeynep is now 26 years old. He is well aware that the wearing effect of obesity has begun on his body, but those around him are not aware of it. Zeynep's mother cannot predict that 10-15 years from now, her daughter will develop diabetes, high blood pressure, joint pain and many other problems. She thinks, "My daughter is overweight but healthy after all."
At the point we have reached in our country today, 40% of the population is facing the problem of obesity. We are the first in Europe in obesity increase rate. If we want to fight obesity effectively, we must support people struggling with obesity in all aspects. Only 5-10% of the population in need of bariatric surgery can have the courage to undergo gastric sleeve surgery or other bariatric surgery and perform it. Others do not have the courage to have an operation because they are afraid of unnecessary fears, financial inadequacies or the prejudices of the society, as in Zeynep's story ("Look, she couldn't hold her throat, she had surgery").
