Obesity and Diabetes

One Of The Biggest Problems Caused By Obesity: Diabetes (Type 2 Diabetes)

Obesity is one of the biggest problems of our age and it is increasing all over the world. According to the latest data of the Ministry of Health in our country, approximately 34% of the population is obese. Considering the increase in the obese population in the research conducted on the basis of countries, Turkey ranks first among European countries. In the world ranking, our country has risen to the 13th rank, overtaking even America in the rate of increase in obesity. This picture is extremely frightening for our future and all members of the society, parents and us have great responsibilities in the fight against obesity.

Obesity is a chronic disease that shortens human life due to various diseases it causes. One of these diseases caused by obesity is type 2 diabetes. Obesity and diabetes are like siblings. Today, there are 415 million diabetics in the world and this figure is unfortunately estimated to increase to 600 million in 2015.

When we look at the risk factors in the formation of diabetes, obesity takes the first place. Obesity and diabetes are a global problem. To give you striking examples from the data of the world diabetes federation:

  • 1 out of every 11 adults in the world has diabetes (415 million)
  • One out of every 2 adults with diabetes does not know that they have diabetes.
  • Every 6 seconds, 1 person dies from diabetes (type 2 diabetes).
  • 12% of global healthcare spending is spent on diabetes ($672 billion)

So how do we know if a person has diabetes? To put it simply:

– If a person's fasting blood sugar is above 126 mg/dl, that person is diabetic.

– If a person's blood sugar is above 200 mg/dl in the 2nd hour of satiety, this person is also diabetic.

In a normal person, when sugar enters our body, insulin is secreted from the pancreas and glucose is effectively distributed to the tissues thanks to this insulin. In obese people with weight problems, adipose tissue acts almost like an enemy by preventing the insulin hormone from fulfilling this task. This is actually the cause of what we call insulin resistance. What we call insulin resistance is actually the beginning of diabetes and is seen in most of the obese people with weight problems. This is what is called hidden sugar among the people. If no action is taken against this, this situation will lead to overt diabetes in the future. Diabetes is a chronic serious disease. Constantly high blood sugar causes destruction in all organs and kidney failure,

There is a strong association between obesity and diabetes. From this point of view, the fight against obesity also means the fight against diabetes (type 2 diabetes). As it is known, obesity surgery (tube stomach, gastric bypass) is the most effective method in this fight. One of the reasons why obesity surgery has become so widespread around the world today is that it has a curative effect on diabetes with hormonal effects independent of weight loss. This is how the concept of bariatric and metabolic surgery actually emerged.

As a result, effective fight against obesity means fighting against obesity-related diseases that may occur in the future. At the beginning of these, type 2 diabetes (diabetes) is in the first place.
